History

James Valley Christian School (usually abbreviated as JVC) was started in 1956 in Huron, South Dakota by churches in the area, one of which donated the first classrooms. The school campus was built next to a local Bible Camp called Byron Bible Camp. The school's mascot is the Vikings. In 1972, the original school burned down and a new campus was built across the road. On April 6, 1997, the school campus was flooded when the dikes on the James River failed; water in the school reached a height of between 5 and 7 feet (1.5 and 2.1 m).[2] For the next few years, the school was based the old Huron Middle School building, prior to its demolition. JVCS moved into the current building in August 2000, which was funded largely by donations from the community.

Academics

They offer World History, Bible, English, American History, Government, Physics, Gen. Science, Physical Science, and Gym.

Athletics

JVC is a member of the South Dakota High School Activities Association. The Vikings Athletic teams include boys' basketball, girls' basketball, track, golf, soccer, volleyball, and cross-country. Athletics are the primary focus at JVC. The boys' track team won the South Dakota state track meet in 1992, and in 2003 they were the runners-up. In 2002, the soccer team won the state championship. The Vikings' school song (or "fight song") is Anchors Aweigh.
